Recently there has been a redirecting in the approach to teaching Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association™. AHA has found the learning curve was significantly enhanced by the use of cognitive instruction of BLS through web based modules that offer real life scenarios. In addition, exercises to reinforce skills offer students the ability to learn at their own pace. It was further discovered that as students interacted with the instructional tutorial followed by hands-on practice, the skills retention and confidence of the student was remarkably greater.
Consequently, we are adapting our BLS courses accordingly to these new AHA guidelines. We shall continue the traditional four hour class for those students who desire this approach, but in addition, we have inaugurated a triphasic program as follows;
1. AHA on-line cognitive instruction at onlineAHA.org
2. Practice Session- one on one with BLS instructor
3. Psychomotor skills testing-pass/fail without coaching
Upon successful completion of this learning system, our students shall immediately receive BLS provider card.
